What is drawdown from the all-time high?
Drawdown measures how far price has fallen from its highest previous level, as a percentage. If Bitcoin's all-time high is $100 and it trades at $70, it is 30% below its high. It is the simplest cycle indicator there is: when price is at or near its high, a new top can only form from there, and when it is far below, a fresh top is less likely in the short term.
How SellSignal calculates it
SellSignal finds the highest daily close in the loaded price history and computes (1 − latest close ÷ highest close) × 100. Because this indicator runs in reverse, a smaller drawdown is hotter: it is hot at 5% below the high or closer and warm at 15% or closer. For the composite score, heat is 0 at 40% below and 100 at the high. It is one of six equal-weight inputs to the overall score. Note that SellSignal uses daily closes, so intraday highs are not included.
As of 2026-10-15, the highest close in the data is $124,777 on 2025-10-07, and price is −34.6% from it (status: cool, heat 13 out of 100).
How deep past drawdowns went
| Peak close | Peak price | Lowest later close | Low price | Drawdown |

| 2013-12-05 | $1,137 | 2015-01-15 | $172 | 84.9% |
| 2017-12-17 | $19,280 | 2018-12-16 | $3,232 | 83.2% |
| 2021-11-09 | $67,562 | 2022-11-22 | $15,760 | 76.7% |
| 2025-10-07 | $124,777 | 2026-07-01 | $58,534 | 53.1% |
Computed from blockchain.info daily data (daily closes, rounded). The last row covers data through 2026-10-15, so it may not be final.
Each cycle's largest drawdown has been shallower than the one before it: about 85%, 83%, 77% and, so far, 53%.
Limits and caveats
- Coincident, not predictive. Being at the high says price is strong right now. Bull markets can spend a long time near their highs.
- Depends on the data window. The "all-time high" is the highest close in the history SellSignal loads, which starts in 2010 and omits intraday spikes.
- Shallower drawdowns may not continue. The trend of shrinking drawdowns is an observation from four cycles, not a rule.
