What is the 2-Year MA Multiplier?
The 2-Year MA Multiplier plots Bitcoin's 730-day (about two-year) simple moving average together with a line at five times that average. Historically, price has tended to trade near or above the 5× line near cycle tops and below the 730-day average itself near cycle bottoms. This page uses the ratio of price to the 730-day average, which makes the same information a single number.
How SellSignal calculates it
SellSignal divides the latest daily close by the average of the previous 730 daily closes. It is warm at 3× or higher and hot at 4.5× or higher, which is just under the classic 5× line. For the composite score, heat is 0 at 1× and 100 at 5×. It is one of six equal-weight inputs to the overall score.
As of 2026-10-15, price is 0.92× its 730-day average of $89,084 (status: cool, heat 0 out of 100). The 5× line is at $445,418.
What happened at past Bitcoin peaks
| Window | Peak close | Multiple at peak close | Highest multiple in window |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2013-14 | 2013-12-05 | 15.83× | 17.56× |
| 2017-18 | 2017-12-17 | 9.81× | 9.81× |
| 2021 | 2021-11-09 | 2.61× | 4.68× |
| 2024-26 | 2025-10-07 | 1.63× | 2.48× |
Computed by SellSignal's own code from blockchain.info daily BTC/USD data, using the same formulas as the dashboard. "Peak" means the highest daily close in each window: Oct 2013 to Feb 2014, Oct 2017 to Jan 2018, Mar to Dec 2021, and Jan 2024 to Oct 15, 2026. Early (2013) prices come from a thin, fragmented market, so treat those rows as rough.
The 5× line was exceeded by a wide margin in 2013 and 2017. In 2021 the multiple peaked at 4.68×, just under 5×, and in 2024-26 it peaked at 2.48×. At the lows that followed each peak (2015-01-15, 2018-12-16, 2022-11-22 and 2026-07-01 in this data), price was below its 730-day average: 0.47×, 0.57×, 0.41× and 0.67×.
Limits and caveats
- Shrinking multiples. Peak multiples have fallen from cycle to cycle. A fixed 5× line would not have triggered in the latest two windows.
- Slow signal. A two-year average reacts slowly, so this tells you about the long-term stretch, not the next few months.
- Small sample. Four cycles are not enough to establish a reliable rule.
