What is weekly RSI?

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a momentum oscillator introduced by J. Welles Wilder Jr. in his 1978 book New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems. It compares the size of recent gains with recent losses and returns a number between 0 and 100. Traders often read values above 70 as overbought and below 30 as oversold. Using weekly instead of daily prices smooths out short-term noise and looks at the larger trend.

How SellSignal calculates it

SellSignal takes every seventh daily close, counting back from the latest day, to build weekly closes. It then applies Wilder's smoothing over 14 periods: average gain divided by average loss gives the relative strength RS, and RSI = 100 − 100 ÷ (1 + RS). The reading is warm at 70 or higher and hot at 80 or higher. For the composite score, heat is 0 at RSI 50 and 100 at RSI 80. It is one of six equal-weight inputs to the overall score.

As of 2026-10-15, weekly RSI is 57.9 (status: cool, heat 26 out of 100).

What happened at past Bitcoin peaks

2017-1891.295.0 (2017-12-19)

Computed by SellSignal's own code from blockchain.info daily BTC/USD data, using the same formulas as the dashboard. "Peak" means the highest daily close in each window: Oct 2013 to Feb 2014, Oct 2017 to Jan 2018, Mar to Dec 2021, and Jan 2024 to Oct 15, 2026. Early (2013) prices come from a thin, fragmented market, so treat those rows as rough.

Weekly RSI was above 80 at the 2013 and 2017 closing highs. In 2021 and 2025, however, momentum peaked months before price did: at each cycle's highest close, RSI was only in the 60s. Using SellSignal's method, the most recent day with a weekly RSI of 80 or higher was 2024-04-08.

As of 2026-10-15, SellSignal calculates weekly RSI (14) at 57.9.

What weekly RSI level has marked Bitcoin tops?

In the data SellSignal uses, weekly RSI was above 90 at the 2013 and 2017 closing highs but only in the 60s at the 2021 and 2025 closing highs. Readings above 80 are treated as hot here, though they have also appeared well before price peaked.

How is weekly RSI calculated?

From weekly closing prices over 14 periods using Wilder's smoothing: RSI = 100 − 100 ÷ (1 + average gain ÷ average loss).

Not by itself. It means recent gains were large compared with recent losses. Strong trends can stay above 70 for a long time.
